MAKE YOUR OBJECTIONS COUNT!

The upcoming planning application by NIE for the North-South Interconnector has been described on several occasions as environmental terrorism. This claim is based on the fact that NIE, the Utilities Regulator and the Government appear to be disregarding evidence that this ultra-high strength powerline would be more efficient, reliable, cheaper and safer if placed underground. In addition the carbon footprint of this project would be considerably reduced if it was undergrounded – surely a bonus in this era of green politics.

However the most terrifying aspect of this debate is the fact that the wishes of the thousands living along the proposed route of this high-strength interconnector are being ignored. NIE claims to have carried out satisfactory consultation with landowners and residents. Yet there is still immense public opposition to this proposal along the corridor of Armagh and Tyrone that is to be devastated by this chain of outmoded steel structures. Residents are appalled at the apparent disregard for health, environment, heritage, visual amenity and property devaluation.

Parents along the line are "reassured" by the fact that only four in one thousand children in the UK are subjected to prolonged and intense EMF exposure. (Richard Doll-EMF Expert) Many families with young children will be living within 100 metres of this proposed high voltage line. How must the parents in these homes cope with the realisation that their sons and daughters are to be the "four children in one thousand" in danger on account of this proposal?

It is worth pointing out that this line will be the first 400kV line in Northern Ireland. No other existing powerline in Northern Ireland is anywhere near as deadly. Another very relevant fact is that the existing cross-border interconnector only ran at 14% capacity in 2008. This meant that it was idle for 86% of the time.

Letters can be written by every member of a household. Parents can write objections for very young children. Primary school children can all object separately and indeed several schools have already given children time to prepare these objection letters. Relatives who visit a household near the line have a right to object. Employees working near the proposed line can object. Sports clubs can object, with additional individual letters from all members. Ramblers, birdwatchers and cyclists in the area can object. Children attending childminding facilities along the line can object, as well as the childminder and the parents using the facility. Landlords, shop owners, Bed and Breakfast businesses and farmers and all employees, customers and tenants can object, the list goes on!

As many letters per household along the proposed route must be generated in a relatively short space of time. Letters can be as simple or as lengthy as you wish. A paragraph stating who the objector is and why they object to the interconnector will suffice as long as it is signed and dated and includes the planning reference number. However please feel free to write at length if you feel strongly about this matter.
